SYNOPSIS The EOS Conference on Trends in Optoelectronics is part of the upcoming World of Photonics Congress 2007 (WoP 2007) that is held in conjunction with the Laser 2007. World of Photonics exhibition in Munich, Germany, from June 18 to 21,2007. The registration fee includes admission to all conferences of the WoP Congress 2007 and to the exhibition. The World of Photonics Congress is sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Optoelectronics synergetically merge photonics and electronics and is successfully used for information retrieval, processing, transport and utilisation. obvious examples are the internet, the and DVD, the digital camera, or flat panel displays, etc. In addition, innovative lighting systems are now on the way to save energy and to create artful furniture. Light is becoming increasingly important for the measuring and verifying of human characteristics, such as fingerprints, and without the laser scanner shopping would take much more time. It is foreseen that optoelectronics and photonics will have further major impact upon the worldwide economy and the benefit of mankind. This EOS conference will exemplify some important trends and new markets in the emerging field of optoelectronics. Top

CONFERENCE TIME TABLE AND TOPICS June 18,2007: Lighting and Displays Chair: Satoshi Ishihara (OITDA - Optoelectronic Industry and Technology Development Association and CRDS/JST, Japan) Invited speakers: Yutaka Ishii (Sharp Corporation, Japan): Challenges to High-performance LC-TVs in Digital Network Era Ruediger Mueller (Osram OPT0 Semiconductors, Germany): LED Lighting - Achievements and Challenges from a Manufacturer's Perspective
It is the scope of this conference to address the revolutionary achievements and highlights in the development of solid state light sources and flat panel displays. As an example, the efficiency of solid state light sources such as light emitting diodes (LEDs) has steadily been improved over the past decade and it is foreseen that LEDs may outperform even fluorescent lamps in the near future. LEDs are going to replace alternative light sources in areas such as signalling or even general lighting and are being used as backlight of LCD screens. These slim displays are everywhere today, on our mobile phones, wrist watches or our HDTV sets at homes. LCDs are cumntly dominating the flat panel display market being the largest display market share today. And LED projectors, organic LEDs or 3-D displays are already at the horizon.
June 19,2007: Information and Communication Chair: Michael Lebby (OIDA - Optoelectronics Industry Development Association, USA) Invited speakers: David Smith (Centre for Integrated Photonics, United Kingdom) Ed Murphy (JDSU, USA): "Optoelectronic Devices for Optical Communication Systems"
This conference is devoted to a discussion and presentation of recent advances in the persistent development of high speed and broadband transport of voice, data and TV signals and the ubiquitous optical internet. The highways of information and communication are optical and the fibre is coming closer and closer to the costumer: Fibre to the home (mH) and triple play are key economic areas under test to provide broadband access to the end user. A similar revolution took place in optical storage which is already a multi billion dollar market. The thirst for capacity has lead to the development of CDs, then DVDs, and now the blu-ray discs - but it seems to be still insatiable. The trends in this market segment will also be a topic of this conference.
World of Photonics Congress 2007 The WORLD OF PHOTONICS CONGRESS is a unique event that covers all of photonics. Topics range from the latest research and development including basic research, medical application, as well as lasers in manufacturing, sensors and industrial image processing to discussions about physical processes in new light sources.
Laser.World of Photonics 2007 The WORLD OF PHOTONICS CONGRESS is the leading international congress for optical technologies in Europe. It is held in conjunction with LASER.WORLD OF PHOTONICS, the international trade fair for optical technologies including components, systems and applications, so there is an intense exchange between the scientific and industrial sectors. Themes are selected-and discussed based on their scientific relevance and the industrial impact. The WORLD OF PHOTONICS CONGRESS is a unique event that covers all of photonics.
