The EOS meeting on Diffractive Optics is the seventh in the series. The previous meetings took place in Savonlinna (1997), Jena (1999), Budapest (2001), Oxford (2003), Warsaw (2005), and Barcelona (2007).

Synopsis

After 20 years of active research and development of design and fabrication techniques, diffractive optics is approaching a status of mature technology – in addition to the ongoing fundamental basic and applied research, we can find diffractive optics in increasingly many applications which are either completely based on diffraction phenomenon or diffractive solution is remarkably more compact, light-weight, or cost-effective than its alternatives.

The EOS Topical Meeting on Diffractive Optics gathers the scientists and engineers working in the field of diffractive optics in industry or academic institutes. The scope of the meeting is to give the attendees a wide picture of the field, from fundamental modelling of light–matter interaction to design techniques and from fabrication techniques to novel applications.

The EOS meeting on Diffractive Optics will include focus sessions on Optics in Displays, Illumination, and Vision as well as the half-day seminar Unified Optical Modeling with VirtualLab.

JEOS:RP - the online Journal of the European Optical Society: Rapid Publications - will publish a special issue "Diffractive Optics". Submission deadline: 19 April 2010. The special issue is open for all experts interested in publishing their research in JEOS:RP. Attendees of this EOS topical meeting receive a discount on the publication rate. Unified Optical Modeling with VirtualLab™

Investigation of optical systems demands for different modeling in lens and micro-structured regions. Propagation techniques ranging from geometrical optics to rigorous techniques must work on one platform. That is what we call unified optical modeling. It also includes system simulation for different types of sources including coherent, incoherent and partially coherent light fields. VirtualLab™ has been developed to fulfill these demands.

In the seminar we discuss the following topics:

  • Fundamentals of unified optical modeling and its implementation in VirtualLab™
  • Selection of different modeling techniques to different regions of the system
  • Ray tracing in unified optical modeling
  • Source models in VirtualLab™
  • Design and analysis of diffractive optics
  • Analysis of micro-optical systems including lens arrays
  • LED modeling
  • Ultras-short pulse propagation
  • Partially temporal source modeling
  • Laser resonator analysis including diffractive optics
  • Fourier modal method analysis
  • Polarization effect analysis
  • Non-paraxial modeling

Various simulations on the basis of VirtualLab™ 4 will be presented.

All seminar participants may receive an evaluation license of VirtualLab™ together with all sample files presented at the seminar. The evaluation license is valid till the end of March 2010.

The seminar will be held by Frank Wyrowski, University of Jena, DE

Final Programme

Important information for flight connections from Helsinki
If your travel agency has issued Helsinki-Joensuu as a separate ticket, you should be aware that, unless the air companies have an agreement with Finnair (Finnair belongs to One-World alliance, and any other company in that alliance has an agreement with Finnair), your luggage may not be automatically transferred to the final destination. This means that you must carry your luggage by yourself from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 at Helsinki-Vantaa. The distance between terminals is a few hundred meters, and there is no need to go outside of the terminal building. Note that this issue is not relevant if the tickets to and from Helsinki are included in a single ticket. In any case, you should ensure the question at the check-in counter.

SOKOS HOTEL KOLI

Room rates vary between 91 € and 111 €.  A third bed in a twin room costs 20 € extra. When making your reservtion. please indicate that you will participate in the EOS Topical Meetingon Diffractive Optics. For  reservations, please contact the hotel directly at: Phone: +358 20 1234 662, koli.reception@sok.fi (Please don't use the online form!).

There are no free rooms anymore in the hotel! For alternative accommodation, please contact koli@myeos.org!

Extend your stay!
Combine work with pleasure and extend your stay by a few days! Take this excellent opportunity to enjoy and discover Finland's attractions in the winter season, when the trees of the region are fully covered with snow and Lake Pielinen is completely frozen. In this scenery Koli offers the steepest ski slopes in southern Finland and snowshoe treks. You can fish through the lake ice, drive the ice road with snowmobiles and dog-team trails or go skiing using the trails over hill and lake – the choice is yours!
